Nearly two years ago, we packed our belongings and left Vancouver, Canada to make the long and beautiful journey down to Los Angeles. Despite having worked in sunny and welcoming California before, I was still shocked and amazed at how quickly I found “my people”, and how fast I found inspiration and support in the city of lights.
Upon arriving, I was immediately contacted by multiple women-owned businesses in the wedding industry for shoots. From gown designers to florists, everywhere I looked I saw women thinking outside of the box, challenging conventions and boldly exploring the unknown of whatever it was they specialized in. In a city often known for it’s plastic “fake-ness”, my experience was the opposite. I saw women of true passion, unafraid of dreaming big and trying new things. I felt a comradeship, a like-mindedness that held no competition, only solidarity. An understanding that together we could create something even better, something even more beautiful.
This shoot was one of those first special collaborations. It happened within months of my arrival, and when I look at the images all I see is evidence that I am surrounded by brilliant and brave women. When I look at the photos, I feel that in finding these women creatives (or more accurately, being found by them) I tapped into something deeper, a well of support and inspiration that we as women can only do for each other. And I am so insanely grateful.
